The 12th Annual Fair Housing Symposium will move beyond experts talking to experts in an effort to build awareness and incite action on fair housing issues often ignored or unknown to social justice organizations and advocates. For the first time, the day-long symposium aims to attract those who work on behalf of marginalized populations but currently do not incorporate fair housing knowledge or issues into their work. The conference will provide attendees with a better understanding of housing discrimination, and how it effects the lives of the populations they serve. Conference workshops will focus on how participants can easily incorporate fair housing information and programs into their existing work.
While some may view housing discrimination as peripheral to the needs of their target populations, a lack of fair housing can impact the quality of life for individuals, families and communities. The right to choose where one lives can affect employment and educational opportunities, proximity to friends and family, access to transportation, commercial and governmental services, and even personal safety.

The Equal Rights Center: Originally formed in 1983, the Equal Rights Center (ERC) is a national non-profit civil rights organization based in Washington, D.C. With members located in every state the District of Columbia, the ERC works nationally to promote equal opportunity in housing, employment, disability rights, immigrant rights, and access to public accommodations and government services for all protected classes under federal, state, and local laws.
The DC Department of Housing and Community Development:
The DC Office of Human Rights: The District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) was established to eradicate discrimination, increase equal opportunity and protect human rights for persons who live in or visit the District of Columbia. The agency enforces local and federal human rights laws, including the DC Human Rights Act, by providing a legal process to those who believe they have been discriminated against. OHR also proactively enforces human rights in the District through Director’s Inquiries, which allow it to identify and investigate practices and policies that may be discriminatory.
The event hosts would like to thank the Developmental Disabilities Council of the District of Columbia (DDC) for sponsoring the event space. The DDC seeks to strengthen the voice of people with developmental disabilities and their families in DC in support of greater independence, inclusion, empowerment and the pursuit of life as they choose. We strive to create change that eliminates discrimination and removes barriers to full inclusion through our advocacy.
